English/Nat Greek police posing as journalists have overpowered an Ethiopian man who hijacked an Olympic Airways jet by taking a flight attendant hostage with a table knife. None of the 114 people on board was hurt in the rescue. The hijacker told police he was trying to avoid returning to Ethiopia, where he had been imprisoned last year for criticising the government. Olympic Airlines Flight 472 was 30 minutes from touching down in Athens when the hijacker struck. Using a knife from his food tray, he took flight attendant Sofia Mastelou hostage and demanded to meet representatives of the U-N and the media. The plane landed just after four in the morning (0100 GMT) and the waiting media were taken out to speak to the man. Holding a knife to the throat of his captiv...
Scenes from the early 1940's of the prototype German ME-262 taxiing around field and taking off, as well as mechanics working on the plane and jet engines. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_Me_262 The Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe ("Swallow") was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft. Design work started before World War II began, but engine problems prevented the aircraft from attaining operational status until mid-1944. Compared with Allied fighters of its day, including the jet-powered Gloster Meteor, it was much faster and better armed. In combat, when properly flown, it proved difficult to counter due to its speed. Me 262 pilots claimed a total of 509 Allied kills (although higher claims are sometimes made) against the loss of about 100 Me 262s. ...
Natural Sound Chechen fighters have shot down a Russian jet during a bombing raid on a village near the capital Grozny. Jubilant fighters celebrated the downing of the plane while Russia continued its bombing and artillery attacks both on Grozny and surrounding villages. A Russian jet streaks across the sky on a bombing raid on villages outside Grozny. It's an increasingly common sight here as the Russian military hurls ever more powerful weaponry at the breakaway republic in a bid to dislodge its stubborn defenders. Armed only with machine guns, the Chechens are eager to strike back. Astonishingly, today they managed to score a hit against one of these fast-moving jets. The plane leaves a trail of smoke and then plunges into the ground on the horizon. The fighter...

Natural Sound The US space agency NASA has admitted a top-secret 230 (m) million dollar jet crashed earlier this year. The X-31 experimental jet, built for a special research program, crashed spectacularly in January near the agency's air base in California. This recently released NASA film shows the moment every test pilot fears. The X-31 was designed to be `super' maneuverable by the use of tail paddles which deflect engine exhaust. Its so-called thrust vectoring could give a combat fighter an advantage in turning and pointing at targets. The pilot of the experimental aircraft was given no warning. The X-31 was performing normally as it flew through the bright blue skies above Edward's Air Base in California in January. Things were quick to change - NASA investi...
