After twelve months of hard work and a million euro investment (1.4 million US dollars), the day has finally arrived for French entrepreneur Philippe Fretel to test out his new creation - the "Exo Watt." It's his own version of a jet ski - and he's well aware that there's a lot resting on today's test run. "My feeling today is that we are immersing one year's worth of work, and that our future, and our company's future, depends on what will happen in the next five minutes," says Fretel. It doesn't go quite according to plan. But Fretel isn't going to let his project sink completely. He gets back to work, refining his design. Fretel is not working alone on the project. He's teamed up with tech company Nova Simulations to create the Exo Watt. David Ohayon, the company's techni...

English/Nat Greek police posing as journalists have overpowered an Ethiopian man who hijacked an Olympic Airways jet by taking a flight attendant hostage with a table knife. None of the 114 people on board was hurt in the rescue. The hijacker told police he was trying to avoid returning to Ethiopia, where he had been imprisoned last year for criticising the government. Olympic Airlines Flight 472 was 30 minutes from touching down in Athens when the hijacker struck. Using a knife from his food tray, he took flight attendant Sofia Mastelou hostage and demanded to meet representatives of the U-N and the media. The plane landed just after four in the morning (0100 GMT) and the waiting media were taken out to speak to the man. Holding a knife to the throat of his captiv...

Spanish/Nat A day after an Ecuadorean aeroplane leased by Air France crashed killing 53 people in Bogota, French pilots on Tuesday criticised such accords which they said put passenger security at risk. France's National Airline Pilots' Union (SNPL) said in a statement it was opposed to all forms of code-sharing and chartering between airlines. "These commercial accords always lead to the same thing: the passenger gets on a plane whose colours don't match the code on the ticket," the statement said. Saying that the ensuing result was "a judicial and security mess," the union said it was "illusory" that airlines such as Air France could carry out rigorous quality control tests on airlines with which they have flying agreements. Air France Flight 422, a plane leased from...

Natsound Taiwan's first squadron of locally-built jet fighters has entered service Wednesday to strengthen the island's defences against mainland China. The move is a potential blow to France and the United States, who until now have been Taiwan's main source for military aircraft. It's thought likely that Taiwan may now seek to sell its fighters abroad, marking the country's first step into the international arms market. They've taken ten years to research. Now it's hoped they will protect the island of Taiwan from attack. 20 locally-made Indigenous Defence Fighters are now in service. They'll carry locally-made air-to-air Sky Sword missiles. Another 110 will follow by 1998. Originally, Taiwan planned to build 250 because they couldn't buy weapons abroad. Potential supp...
