The development of the 'jet propulsion gas-turbine', otherwise known as the jet engine, transformed flying in the post war-era. This was both in military and commercial terms. Covering the story from the 1920s, The Wonder Jet follows Air Commodore Sir Frank Whittle. Sir Frank plays himself in the film. It moves from his days as a young Royal Air Force (RAF) cadet struggling against all obstacles to realise his dream of the jet engine. Whittle did not produce the world's first jet plane. This honour goes to German Hans von Ohain with the Heinkel He 178 on 27 August 1939. However, Whittle greatly contributed to the advancement of the jet engine, an invention that has proved vital to the modern age. (10 Feb 2018) The Israeli military have conducted a controlled explosion at the crash site of a F-16 fighter jet downed earlier on Saturday. The Israeli military said a pilot was seriously injured and evacuated on Saturday to a hospital for medical treatment, after his F-16 jet came under Syrian fire. The military said its planes faced massive anti-aircraft fire from Syria that forced the two pilots to abandon the F-16 jet that crashed. A second pilot was lightly wounded. The F-16 crashed near Harduf in northern Israel after facing heavy anti-aircraft fire. The Israeli military then carried out what it called a "large scale attack" against Iranian and Syrian targets in Syria. After the Second World War the jet engine gradually replaced the propeller in squadron after squadron of the RAF. The Canberra, Britain's first jet bomber, entered service in 1951. This was the same year as the public information film Wing to Wing, showcased the RAF's worldwide commitments and new jet aircraft. This film made available courtesy the UK National Archives. . Natural Sound Chechen fighters have shot down a Russian jet during a bombing raid on a village near the capital Grozny. Jubilant fighters celebrated the downing of the plane while Russia continued its bombing and artillery attacks both on Grozny and surrounding villages. A Russian jet streaks across the sky on a bombing raid on villages outside Grozny. It's an increasingly common sight here as the Russian military hurls ever more powerful weaponry at the breakaway republic in a bid to dislodge its stubborn defenders. Armed only with machine guns, the Chechens are eager to strike back. Astonishingly, today they managed to score a hit against one of these fast-moving jets. The plane leaves a trail of smoke and then plunges into the ground on the horizon. The fighters rush to celebrate the kill with the sharp-eyed gunner responsible for bringing the plane down, a young Chechen who identified himself as Ahmed. But not everything went the Chechens' way today. In the strategic western town of Bamut, Russian helicopters were reported to have opened fire on mourners at a funeral, killing three people. The jubilation of the young Chechen fighters contrasts with the misery of these Chechen women who have seen their world destroyed around them since the Russian invasion began in December. As the Russian barrage continues Chechen civilians try to escape the fighting as best they can, despite a shattered transport system. Natsound Taiwan's first squadron of locally-built jet fighters has entered service Wednesday to strengthen the island's defences against mainland China. The move is a potential blow to France and the United States, who until now have been Taiwan's main source for military aircraft. It's thought likely that Taiwan may now seek to sell its fighters abroad, marking the country's first step into the international arms market. They've taken ten years to research. Now it's hoped they will protect the island of Taiwan from attack. 20 locally-made Indigenous Defence Fighters are now in service. They'll carry locally-made air-to-air Sky Sword missiles. Another 110 will follow by 1998. Originally, Taiwan planned to build 250 because they couldn't buy weapons abroad. Potential suppliers were placed under pressure by the Chinese government. But in a compromise worked out in 1992, Taiwan ordered 150 F-16 jets from the United States and 60 Mirage 2000-5s from France. They'll be delivered in 1996. The performance of the IDF has come under scrutiny from the Control Yuan, Taiwan's highest watchdog body. In 1989, a prototype skidded off the runway during its debut flight and two years later another prototype crashed into the sea killing the pilot. The IDFs entered service at the Chingchuangang air base in Taichung in central Taiwan. The ceremony was attended by Taiwanese premier Lien Chen and defence minister Chiang Chung-Ling. Taiwan is still ruled by the Kuomintang (Nationalist) party, who fled the Communist takeover of China's mainland in 1949. Beijing regards Taiwan as a renegade province and has never ruled out using force to recover the island. Cross-strait talks between Taiwan and Beijing are planned for January. Wide of the IDF jet in the hangar STORYLINE Taiwan has unveiled an upgraded version of its locally produced Indigenous Defence Fighter (IDF) jet. President Ma Ying-Jeou, who attended the unveiling ceremony on Thursday, said the upgrade would help bolster Taiwan's defence against possible Chinese attack. Taiwan has moved to upgrade its own fleet of aircraft because of a long delay in a US decision on the sale of advanced F-16 fighter jets to the island. Taiwanese newspapers reported that the military will upgrade 71 aircraft to enable them to carry more types of missiles, including an anti-radiation missile and air-to-ground missile. The Indigenous Defence Fighters entered service in 1992. Beijing condemns all foreign military transactions with Taipei as interference in its internal affairs. The two sides split amid civil war in 1949, but Beijing still claims Taiwan as its territory. (29 Mar 2018) LEAD IN: An Emirates superjumbo jet lands at Beirut International Airport for the first time. Lebanese authorities hope it will herald the start of a boost in tourism. STORY-LINE: How do you welcome in a new superjumbo jet? By spraying it with huge jets of water of course. This is how the new A380 is received at Beirut International Airport as it lands today (Thursday). The world's largest passenger jet brings with it hopes of a sustained revival to Lebanon's tourism and travel sectors. The one-off Emirates Airbus A380 flight from Dubai was a nod to the substantial passenger traffic between Lebanon and Gulf nations, where many Lebanese nationals work, and many more pass through on the way to destinations farther afield. "We are pleased to welcome the Airbus plane A380 in Rafik Hariri International airport in Beirut that pulses with life, that used to be the principle destination for your airlines network in the region," says Lebanese transport minister Yousef Finianos at the welcoming ceremony. "We consider this event as an important event for Lebanon that will allow the passengers to practice this chance of being in a double decker plane that is considered one of the pioneer carriers internationally and that provide the best air services." Lebanon welcomed 1.85 million tourists in 2017, according to the Tourism Ministry. This is the most since 2.16 million came in 2010, after which civil strife in Syria and political uncertainty in Lebanon sent the industry into a protracted depression. There are nine flights daily from Dubai to Beirut, on three different carriers. "Rafik Hariri international airport has witnessed today an historic event where it received the biggest civil plane in the world - the Airbus A380 that belongs to the Emirates airlines - for the first time on its land," says United Arab Emirates ambassador to Lebanon Hamad Saeed Sultan Al-Shamsi. "This event will raise the trust in the relations between the countries and it will reflect the bright image that the United Arab Emirates is trying to transfer it to all the countries of the world," he added. Tourism is one of the key pillars of Lebanon's economy, contributing to 19 percent of the country's GDP, according to the UK-based World Travel and Tourism Council. However, Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport, Lebanon's only commercial airfield, is sorely out-of-date and lines at security can stretch for hours in the summer months, when throngs of expatriates visit the country for business and pleasure. The airport, renovated in 1992 after the civil war, is designed to handle six million passengers annually. In 2017, it saw over eight million, according to the airport's research department. Lebanon's cabinet and the country's flagship airline, Middle East Airlines, are considering two plans to expand and improve the airport's facilities, one costing 88 million US dollars and the other 200 million US dollars. The 88 million dollar plan would only tackle security improvements and basic infrastructure increasing the airport annual capacity by two million passengers. The 200 million dollar expansion would involve redesigning the passenger terminal and turning an old, unused customs shed and hangar into another terminal. This will increase the airport annual capacity by five million passengers. Their aim is to expand capacity to 10 million passengers annually by 2020 and then support continued growth beyond that. The military said it struck 12 targets including three aerial defense batteries and four Iranian targets that are part of Iran's military establishment in Syria. The Israeli military also shot down an Iranian drone it said infiltrated the country before launching its "large-scale attack" on at least a dozen Iranian and Syrian targets.
